Here is a basic building tutorial to help you get started with building. It was written by AlaskanShadow.
1. Locate one of the checkered walls along the paths branching out from GZ (where you teleport into the world)

2. Right click the object with your mouse. You should see a box appear. This is called the "objects properties" box. This box will be used to edit and create objects. In order to begin building, you must copy the checkered wall. To do so, find the 3rd button in the Object properties box (looks like a yellow cube) and click it, or press the "insert" button on your keyboard. Once you have done this, you will have created an object of your own which you can edit.

3. Next, right click your new object. Once again, the Object properties box will appear. In the Objects Properties box, you will see it is divided into 3 text fields. The first area is the "object" area. This is what you will use to change your object to another object. You'll notice in this field, it has a name like "wall031.rwx". Each object has a unique name ending in .rwx, changing the text in the object area also changes the object itself.

4. Try deleting the text in the object area where it says "wall031.rwx", and replace it with "pp01.rwx". Then close the Object Properties box. You will see your checkered wall has changed into a taller grey wall.

For a list of other object names to try, click on the "User Guide" tab in your ActiveWorlds browser, select "building" from the list, and then select "Alphaworld Building" for a catagorized list of objects.

5. Now that you know how to create objects, you need to know how to move them. When you right click your object, you will notice a series of buttons at the top of the Object Properties box that appears. The first 3 buttons, are as follows:

1st button: The undo button (this button undo's the last action you tried on the object)
2nd button: The delete button (this button deletes the current object if you press it)
3rd button: The duplicate button (this button creates an exact copy of your current object)
6. The other buttons, are to move the object:

1st button: Moves the object away from you
2nd button: Moves the object towards you
3rd button: Moves the object left
4th button: Moves the object right
5th button: Moves the object up
6th button: Moves the object down
7th button: Tilts the object towards you
8th button: Tilts the object away from you
9th button: Rotates the object counter clockwise (to the left)
10th button: Rotates the object clockwise (to the right)
11th button: Tilts the object to the left
12th button: Tilts the object to the right
13th button: Resets the rotation of an object
14th button: Snaps the object to the ground (this helps objects line up with each other)
7. Once you have learned how to move and create objects, you can try out textures, signs, and other effects. You'll notice in your object properties box, a line called "action". This is where you will type in commands to add effects to your object.

The following commands when typed in the "action" area will produce certain effects:
create light: This command makes your object give off light
create texture stone2: This command changes the pattern of your object (stone2 can be changed to whatever pattern you want)
Create sound: When you use this command, it must be followed with the url to a .mid, .mp3, or .wav file. This will allow your object to play music. example: "create sound http://objects.activeworlds.com/aw/sounds/africa1.mid". To make the sound repeat, add "loop" after the url. example: "create sound http://objects.activeworlds.com/aw/sounds/africa1.mid loop"

Create color: This command, when followed by a color name (example: scarlet), or an RGB color (example: CCCC99), will change the color of your object. example: "create color scarlet"
There are many other commands you can use, to learn more about them, click on your "User Guide" tab in the ActiveWorlds browser, select "Building" from the list, and then select "commands" to see a list of commands to use and how to use them.
