Active Worlds Terms and Slang


Here is an explanation of some of the terms and slang you will find in AW. Some are also used in chatrooms across the internet.


AW - Abbreviation for ActiveWorlds. It also is the world name of Alphaworld, the main building world for citizens. Tourists can also visit Alphaworld, but they cannot build.

AFK - Abbreviation for "away from keyboard".

LOL - Abbreviation for "Laughing out loud".

ROFL - Abbreviation for "Rolling on the floor laughing".

BRB - Abbreviation for "Be right back"

WB - Abbreviation for "welcome back".

TY - Abbreviation for "thank you".

W/E - Abbreviation for "whatever".

:) - A smiley face. Turn your head sideways to see.

citizen - A registered user of ActiveWorlds. Citizens have protected building.

tourist - A nonregistered user of ActiveWorlds. Tourists building is not protected and tourists have grey chat.

world - AW doesn't have chatrooms, but rather different "worlds" with different features and environments.

bot - A bot is a program that can connect to AW. Only citizens use bots. Bots may be used for a variety of purposes, from chat to monitoring worlds.

AWI - ActiveWorlds, Inc. This is the company that owns and manages ActiveWorlds.

Gatekeeper - A Gatekeeper is a person who moderates the default world for AW, AWGate. You might have met one the first time you came to AW.

Peacekeeper - A Peacekeeper maintains order in the AW universe in all of the AWI owned and some private worlds.

telegram - Messages that citizens can send each other. Tourists don't have this ability.

Building Inspector - A component of the AW browser that monitors building and prevents people from building past the cell limit or encroaching.

Cell Limit - The maximum number of information (objects, action commands, descriptions) that can be stored in a cell.

Cell - A division of a world. Each cell takes up 1 coordinate by 1 coordinate. Press F10 to see.

Immigration Officer - A component of the AW browser that sends messages to users such as welcome messages.

building - The act of adding and changing objects in a world.

caretaker - The manager of a world. They can set the world attributes, modify ejections, etc.

PS (bolds) - Public Speaker right. Usually given to officials of a world, it permits them to stand out in chat and to hear chat from a longer range.

eject - The act of booting someone out of a world. Usually only done to maintain order and stop troublemaking.

[Customs Aide] - A bot (not a human) found in some AWI worlds that monitors chat.
