This Lesson is for a flat roof....recommended for the impatient student. A good
patient student ( don't we love those!) would benefit greatly if you added a
peaked roof as demonstrated in the teacher tips area in AWSchool 47N 39E
text in ** = what to do ( instructions to the teacher)
text beginning with # and in black = to be pasted to student
text in ( ) = advice / tips while teaching
*Before anything else, make sure they aren't seeing triangles! Also make sure they are in first person and that they have their chat box pulled up to display at least 6-8 lines of chat.
# You might wanna log this chat session. Go to Options > Settings > Chat and check the box that says "Log chat to file". From now on, all chat you see in AW will be put in chat.txt in C:\Active Worlds.
( Don't spend too long on preliminaries. Most students want to hop straight in and build their house, and will
get bored with too many long winded instructions that at this stage will not mean a lot to them)
*Stand in front of the Checkered Wall*
#OK See this black and white wall? Can you stand just in front of me facing the wall? :o)
( if they seem to be standing very close or comment that they cannot see the wall, ask them to check if
they are in third or first person)
# RIGHT click on the wall, a box will pop up, called OBJECT PROPERTIES.... see it?
# If its in your way move it by "grabbing it" with your cursor, to the upper left corner, so you can see the
wall and what I'm saying here.
( At this stage, some one that doesn't get the object properties box could be using a left handed mouse, or
is not carefully clicking or perhaps has only one line showing in their chat box and
didn't catch your *right click* instruction)
# At the top of the box you will notice a row of icons, those are used for
the MOUSE METHOD of building.
#We wont be using them in this lesson, Don't play with them just yet :o))
# With your OBJECT PROPERTIES BOX open can you press INSERT on your keyboard ( above the delete key
near the arrow keys) ONCE only?
( if they have problems with insert not working, make sure they have used the correct insert key. The one
on the number pad will only work if NUMLOCK is off.
If they try to type to you with the Ob Box open they may get confused as to where the type is going to,
you may have to advise them of how to solve this.
You may also need to ask them to follow your steps and not race ahead at this stage. For a lot it is
tempting to start playing with the icons.)
#Now use your bottom arrow key to take it out on to the green land (toward you) at least thirty
presses....then close box ( little X in the corner)
( its nice to throw in a "Well Done!!" and lots of smilies here and at other stages of their lesson)
# I can't see what you've done until the Object Properties box is closed so I'll be asking you to close it a
little more often than you would normally need to, so i can check your progress. :o)
#now to change an object, you right click and delete the object name( see the name of the *wall032.rwx*
in the object line?) and then type in walk001.rwx instead and close the box
#Great! you got it :o) that's how you change an object :o)
#Ok, lets make a wall or two? right click on the walk ( grey floor) and press INSERT once
#lets stop here for a moment. Did you notice a little jump as you pressed insert (duplicated)?
#That happens every time you duplicate, so to compensate and to help you avoid overlaps its a good idea
to get into the habit of pressing your bottom arrow key once after you duplicate.
#so starting again.....you've pressed INSERT, now press the bottom arrow key
once, THEN erase the OBJECT name .... and type in pp01m.rwx and close box
#see how it ( the new wall ) is positioned in the middle?
# that's because you pulled it back into the middle when you pressed the bottom arrow key. If you
hadn't it would be offset making the lining up of your wall more difficult.
# now it will be easy to just right click again and use your arrow keys to move it eight back and it will line up
with the edge of the walk :) close box
#The MOST IMPORTANT part of building in AW is COUNTING... most objects follow a pattern as regards to
size so it REALLY helps if you get to know the sizes and count while building.
#Now right click the wall panel, duplicate it, move it forward one to compensate for the jump, then rotate it
to the right with your PAGE UP key 6 times, then close the box.
#Now right click the same wall, move it to the right 8 times, (with the arrow key pointing to the right) ,then toward us 8 times with the arrow down
key, then close the box. :o)
# Try that twice more until you have a square box.
#Now we need a door for your house. Please right click any wall and change the object name to pd01.rwx
#as you can see the door is only a 8 click panel and the other walls are 16, so lets move it ( no insert yet)
over four taps of side arrow key...
#once you have it in the corner snugly press insert then bottom arrow key once...
#then use side arrow key to move it eight over into the gap and delete the object name and type in
pw01.rwx....
#close box
( throw in a "Great!!!" or two :o))
#Now for a easy flat roof, right click on the floor, then bottom arrow key.....then the (plus) + key 8 times,
close box.
( continue to give instructions and object names for a few items of furniture and a TV if their interest has
not waned by this point. Once the lesson is finished is the time to tell them about CTRL and group delete on
their practice house)
